High Dose Rate (HDR) Radiation TherapyQuality assurance through effective radiotherapy.HDR Radiation Therapy is a form of Brachytherapy used to treat select patients suffering from prostate cancer, gynecological and breast cancers as well as lung cancer. Our doctors favor HDR therapy because they have the ability to actually shape the radiotherapy dose to match the size of the tumor - preserving the healthy cells of the body! During this type of radiotherapy cancer treatment, we will place 'interstitial radiation' seeds, or tiny pods of radiation energy, into or next to the cancerous tumors to eradicate harmful cells and shrink them. High dose rate cancer therapy is a minimally-invasive procedure to deliver the radiotherapy and the higher dosage does not increase side effects. TAKE ACTION! Schedule a Private Consultation » High Dose Rate (HDR) Radiation Therapy BenefitsHDR radiation therapy delivers powerful doses of therapeutic radiation to a highly strategic point next-to or within the tumor. Advantages of HDR Therapy include:
High Dose Rate (HDR) Radiation Therapy Procedure and TechniqueRadiation Oncology ConsultationDuring your consultation with Coastal CyberKnife & Radiation Oncology, you will find answers to the questions you have and learn about life-saving positive solutions that we offer to defeat cancer. We will review, in detail, your medical and family history, overall health and concerns to discern:
Phase I: Cancer Treatment Planning and VerificationA minimally-invasive procedure, such as this, is planned through digitally graphing the actual site and surrounding organs/tissue. We will then prescribe a specific dosage to your needs and deliver all of the gathered information to the physics team to organize preparation. Phase II: Cancer Therapy DeliveryThrough sophisticated imagery and three-dimensional (3-D) guidance along the shape of cancerous tumors, delivery of cancer treatment may only be performed by doctors educated in this type of therapy. At Coastal CyberKnife, efficient delivery is a priority. Prostate Cancer Phase III:After a treatment plan is developed using imagery-guided technology, intra-prostate catheters will be placed by robot to painlessly deliver your radiotherapy. Treatments for the prostate generally last 15-minutes to half-an-hour and the average patient requires 2 to 3 procedures. Once the dosage is in place, the catheters will be removed and you may go home! Gynecologic Cancer Phase III:After a treatment plan is developed using imagery-guided technology, intra-vaginal or -uterine catheters will be placed by robot to painlessly deliver your radiotherapy. Treatments for the vagina or uterus generally last 15-minutes to half-an-hour and the average patient requires 2 to 3 procedures on a weekly basis. Once the dosage is in place, the catheters will be removed and you may go home! Breast Cancer Phase III:During your lumpectomy, intra-mammary catheters will be placed by robot to painlessly deliver your radiotherapy to the area of the lump. Imagery-guided technology will then confirm placement for our doctors and a treatment plan is developed. Treatments for the breast generally last 15-minutes to half-an-hour and the average patient requires 2 procedures every day for 5 days. Once the dosage is in place, the catheters will be removed and you may go home! Lung Cancer Phase III:This type of HDR Radiation Therapy may require local anesthetics. A catheter will be placed by robot to painlessly deliver your radiotherapy to the area of the lung. Then, imagery-guided technology will be used for our doctors to develop a treatment plan. Treatments for the lung generally last 15-minutes to half-an-hour and the average patient requires 1 procedure for the next 2 to 3 weeks. Once the dosage is in place, the catheters will be removed and you may go home! Post-Treatment: Quality AssuranceAfter treatment delivery, you will be allowed to rest until anesthesia wears off and you may return to your usual daily routines. Follow your doctor's specific instructions, which may include no heavy lifting or strenuous activities. This may be suggested for 3-5 days post-treatment. Follow-ups begin 3 months after the procedure, and then are repeated every 6-12 months. We will be looking at any side effects you may be facing as well as evaluating to ensure that cancer does not reoccur.
